About me

Hello there! I am Marieke, a copyeditor specialized in academic manuscripts. I work on journal articles, book manuscripts, and PhD dissertations. I improve a text’s grammar, punctuation, flow, and overall consistency. I check basic facts and logic. I format a document according to specific guidelines or a certain editorial style. I fix footnotes, citations, and bibliographies. Throughout all this, I maintain an open line of communication with my clients and consult with them about important style decisions. I work with the Chicago Manual of Style, Hart’s Rules (Oxford style), APA, MLA, Harvard, and others.

I am an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and a member of the American Copyeditors’ Society (ACES), SENSE, the Society of English-language professionals in the Netherlands, and Mediterranean Editors & Translators (MET). I have a Professional Editing Standards Certificate from Queen’s University, Canada, have taken many other professional training courses, and regularly attend webinars. You can find my resume here.

I have a PhD in Political Science and a strong background in Arabic, urban studies,  geography, and the political economy of the Middle East. I obtained my MA from the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon. I have published several academic journal articles and book chapters.
