Hello there! I am Marieke, a full-time editor specializing in copyediting academic manuscripts. I work on journal articles, book manuscripts, and PhD dissertations. I improve a text’s grammar, punctuation, flow, and overall consistency. I check basic facts and logic. I format a document according to specific guidelines or a certain editorial style. I fix footnotes, citations, and bibliographies. Throughout all this, I maintain an open line of communication with my clients and consult with them about important style decisions. I work with the Chicago Manual of Style, Hart’s Rules (Oxford style), APA, MLA, Harvard, and others.
I have a PhD in Political Science and a strong background in Arabic, urban studies, geography, and the political economy of the Middle East. I obtained my MA from the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon. I have published several academic journal articles and book chapters. You can find my resume here.
I also work on websites, non-academic non-fiction, and card games. Besides copyediting, I provide stylistic and structural/developmental editing services as well.
I am currently taking courses towards obtaining the Professional Editing Standards Certificate at Queen’s University, Canada, and am enrolled in other professional training courses.
I am a member of Editors Canada, the Society for Proofreaders and Editors (SfEP), and SENSE, the Society for English-language professionals in The Netherlands. I am eligible to work in the EU and Canada (I am a permanent resident).
