Have you finished a book manuscript, journal article, or grant proposal? Has it not been submitted yet because you don’t have time to look up and apply all publisher or funding body guidelines and the required citation style? Would you like a well-trained second pair of eyes to perform a grammar, spelling, and consistency check? Do you need someone to look up each reference and style it correctly?
I can help!
I am an experienced and well-trained copyeditor and former academic. For years, I have helped academics in the social sciences and humanities prepare their work for submission.
I can edit your manuscript so that it conforms to publisher guidelines, the language is polished, and the references are formatted correctly. In this way, you can submit your work with confidence! There are indications that manuscripts that are edited prior to submission perform better during peer review, since reviewers are able to focus on the content of the work without being distracted by missing references, typos, or language inconsistencies.
Please have a look at my services and rates below and contact me at info@mariekekrijnen.com if you are interested! If you are looking for developmental editing services in cultural anthropology, I am happy to refer you to my colleague Dr. Andrew Hodges.
Services and rates
These prices do not include VAT. I do not charge VAT for individuals or institutions outside the EU; for institutions within the EU, VAT is reverse-charged.
Proofreading
I check your work for spelling, grammar, typos, and consistency. Proofreading doesn’t include stylistic interventions such as shortening sentences or improving word choice and usage. It does include a reference completeness check for author-date type citations (I won’t include the reference list in the word count).
Rate: €0.03 per word.
Example: Proofreading an 8,000-word journal article will cost €240.
Copyediting
I edit your work to make the language consistent, accurate, and coherent. I point out things that are unclear, paragraphs that seem overly long, and transitions that could be smoother or more logical, providing suggestions on how to fix these. I edit for flow and refine the language, improving sentence construction and word choice where needed to more effectively convey meaning and resolve ambiguities. I also check that references are complete and formatted according to the preferred citation style, that publisher guidelines are followed, and that cross-references to figures and tables are accurate.
Rate: €0.04 per word.
Example: Copyediting an 8,000-word journal article including references will cost €320.
Reference checking and formatting
This is a service in which you can send me your list of references. In addition to formatting them according to the required citation style, I will look each one up and make sure the author name, titles, and so on are spelled right and conform to journal or publisher requirements.
Rate: €2.5 per reference.
Example: Checking and formatting a reference list containing 100 references will cost €250.
Testimonials
Dr. Sylvia I. Bergh and Dr. Ward Vloeberghs
Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer, Erasmus University Rotterdam
We hired Marieke as a copyeditor for an edited volume and she assisted us in a remarkably efficient way. Her work has greatly improved the quality of our manuscript as Marieke not only served as an attentive editor but she also prepared a very helpful style sheet which prevented a lot of double work.
Marieke really understands what it is to prepare a manuscript for submission and, moreover, had content expertise that really helped in improving the coherence of our book (especially with regard to the transliteration of Arabic words and terminology).
Not only did Marieke’s interventions clarify the meaning of dozens of passages, but her efforts also secured the compliance of all chapters with the overall guidelines imposed by our publisher. Marieke’s communication was impeccable, full of flexibility and understanding despite her often amazingly short turnarounds. Marieke is by far the best copy editor we have worked with, and we most certainly recommend her services to colleagues and friends.

Marieke Krijnen was the language editor of my book The Voices of Women in Witchcraft Trials: Northern Europe (Abingdon: Routledge, 2022), which is a book on historical witchcraft trials. This was a very good co-operation. She contributed with important editorial work, clarifying the content of sentences and phrases. She suggested alternative words and formulations where necessary, and has an ability to emphasize the main content of a paragraph. She easily gets hold of new knowledge. She is quick in answering questions and keeps the deadlines perfectly. I strongly recommend Marieke Krijnen as language editor.

Marieke is a consummate professional. She knows all aspects of academic publishing and expedites careful copy-editing beautifully. She takes the most difficult part of shepherding a project to publication and makes it painless. I cannot imagine doing a large editorial project without her. Or a small one.

Marieke’s proofreading of my article was impeccable. Grammar, punctuation, style guide: she paid attention to every detail. As a result, I feel very confident now about submitting my article for print. She is very correct and delivered before the deadline. Her commenting and correcting style is clear. Overall, working with her is a joy, and I am sure this will not have been the last time.

Extremely professional and incredible value-for-money
Marieke edited an article that I co-authored with a Tanzanian PhD-student. As an ex-colleague, I knew that Marieke would deliver, but the result was even better than expected. Aside from the foolproof language editing, she made clear efforts to understand the message that the author wanted to bring across, and she made some very useful suggestions as to how the article can be improved further. It was at least partly thanks to her professional editing services that the article was accepted without major revisions.

Marieke worked with me on a book manuscript, and was a thorough, attentive, and very engaged editor. She worked incredibly efficiently, even though the text was quite dense theoretically. She did a fantastic work in making it clean, correct, and coherent – both in technical terms (style of references, redundancies, typos), but also in terms of the argument. Her work is truly excellent and I highly recommend her as an editor.
